Last season, Olympiacos reminded everyone of their strength — dominating the EuroLeague Regular Season and once again showing they belong among Europe’s elite. Yet, as has been the case in recent years, the journey stopped short of the ultimate goal. Since then, the debate around what the team needs to take the next step has been intense — but often, it’s led down the wrong path. A lot of the talk has lacked the necessary basketball nuance. Because if Coach Bartzokas is to field a stronger team in 2025–26, he must first highlight the key flaw of last season’s roster — not follow the noise. And probably, he has already addressed it.

Let’s start with the facts: Olympiacos finished top in the EuroLeague in total assists and assist ratio (a stellar 70.5%), and led the league in generating high-quality open shots. And yet, the conversation has oddly revolved around the team’s supposed need for a new point guard. Let’s take a closer look at the backcourt options already in place:

Keenan Evans: An elite pick-and-roll weapon who posted an absurd 1.46 PPP in such situations just befor his injury. The only asterisk is his health — but early indications suggest he’s on track for a strong return.
Thomas Walkup: A superb ball mover and defensive anchor, averaging over 4.5 assists and under 1.7 turnovers per game the past two EuroLeague seasons. Yes, he’s managing a back issue, but he finished strong in the Greek League Finals.
Saben Lee: Arguably the best combo guard outside the NBA/EuroLeague ecosystem last year. While not yet fully integrated, he possesses the skill set to be a serious contributor.

So, is a point guard really the problem?

Dorsey’s threat as a shooter forced defenses into a lose-lose situation: help off Fournier and Dorsey will punish you; stay home on Dorsey, and Fournier/Vezenkov get room to operate.

This isn’t just about praising Dorsey — it’s about what his presence represented. The offense suddenly looked more flexible, more unpredictable, and far better equipped to withstand elite defenses. And that’s despite Olympiacos finishing last season with a terrific 120.3 offensive rating.

That’s why the coaching staff’s focus has been in the right place. Targets like David Jones Garcia (who declined Olympiacos’ offer) and the promising but raw Bryce McGowens show that the front office understands what’s needed.
So, what kind of player should Olympiacos look for?

Not a star. Not necessarily a point guard. But someone who:

Can run pick-and-roll with efficiency and create both for himself and teammates.
Has off-ball skills: spot-up shooting, smart cutting, and the ability to read defensive rotations.
Possesses a high basketball IQ to thrive in a system that demands dual roles — on and off the ball.

Names like Jared Butler or Keaton Wallace are great examples of this type of player. Even Vasilije Micić wasn’t pursued because he’s a “1”, but because he checks every box of what Olympiacos truly needs.

Ολοι αυτα κοιτανε πρωτα το NBA. Μπορουμε και πρεπει να περιμενουμε κατα την αποψη μου. Καλυτερο να περιμενεις δυο μηνες για κατι καλο παρα να βιαστεις για μπαλωμα. Ετσι και αλλιως η ομαδα ειναι δουλεμενη, το ροστερ εχει σχεδον κλεισει

Ενας πολυ καλυτερος Γκος ειναι στην θεωρια γιατι αλλο η πραξη.

Γενικα δικη μου σειρα προτεραιοτητας:
1.Κιλιαν Χειζ: Εν δυναμει τοπ 3 μελλοντικα στην ευρωλιγκα αν δουλεψει με τοπ προπονητη. Αξιζει να παρεις το ρισκο.

2.Κιτον Γουαλας: Πιο ανωριμος απο τον Χειζ. Θα χρειαστει υπομονη μαζι του. Εξαιρετικος σκορερ. Σκυλι στην αμυνα.

3. Μπατλερ: Πιο ωριμος απο Γουαλας. Ενας καλυτερος γκος σε ταλεντο. Δεν τον βλεπω ως μελλοντικο σταρ

4. Μακκαουενς: Δεν τον εχω παρακαλουθησεινκαθολου σε συγκριση με τους αλλους που εχω μια προσωπικη γνωμη. Απο τα βιντεομπου βρηκα να δω με εξιταρουν τα αθλητικα προσοντα και το ποσο γρηγορο release εχει. Μου θυμισε λιγο τον κλαιμπερν οταν ηταν στην γαλατα και τα πρωτα χρονια του στην ΤΣΣΚΑ. Θα το ρισκαρα μαζι του.

5. Τζοουνς: Δεν μου γεμισε το ματι και πεντε παιχνιδια summer league δεν νομιζω οτι ειναι ικανα να μου αλλαξουνε γνωμη.
